The sun’s rays contain harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Once absorbed by the skin, the UV radiation can have devastating consequences on skin cells. The skin responds by producing melanin, which is a pigment that protects the skin from damaging UV rays. Continued exposure to the sun’s rays can cause the melanin to clump, which results in the development of brown age spots. The DNA molecule consists of two strands that coil around each other to form a shape known as a double helix. When absorbed into the skin, the UV radiation can break one or both DNA strands. While breaking just one DNA strand is damaging, a double-strand break can be devastating to a cell. Fortunately, ac-11® can repair single- and double-strand breaks.
Exposure to sun can cause the DNA of skin cells to mutate, or change. Each strand of DNA has a backbone made of alternating sugar and phosphate groups. Attached to each sugar is one of four bases: adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), and thymine (T). Each of these bases bonds with a base on the other strand of DNA. Thymine bases on one strand bond with adenine on the other strand. Thymine and cytosine in DNA can absorb the UV light; the energy from the UV light can open up the bond, and allow the base to bond with other bases. Thymine can bond to thymine, for example, to create T-T Dimers.
